ONE OF THE BEST
THINGS TO COME OUT OF THE RECENT FOLK-REVIVAL TREND, IN MY MIND ANYWAY, IS THE RENEWED INTEREST IN BLENDING ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS
WITH ELECTRONIC BEATS AND BACKDROPS. IT’S A DIFFICULT TASK, SINCE BOTH FORMS ARE EXTREMELY SUBTLE IN THEIR OWN WAYS,
AND IT TAKES A PRETTY TALENTED ARTIST TO PULL IT OFF WITH PANACHE. WITH THAT IN MIND, ENTER ITALY’S FRANCESCO GIANNICO,
WHO SPECIALIZES IN WHAT COULD EASILY BE CALLED “AMBIENT FOLK:” ACOUSTIC GUITARS AND PIANOS INTERTWINED WITH SYNTHS,
SAMPLES, TAPE LOOPS, AND THE REST OF THE USUAL GADGETS AND TOOLS OF MODERN AMBIENT COMPOSERS. THE RESULT COULD BE DESCRIBED
AS THE SOUNDTRACK TO A SUBURBAN TOWN IN A POST-APOCALYPTIC FUTURE INHABITED BY A BAND OF RAGTAG SURVIVORS, AND MAYBE A RADIOACTIVE
MUTANT OR TWO: DESERTED, DISMAL, EERIE, ALWAYS ABOUT TO DESCEND INTO PURE CHAOS, AND YET HELD TOGETHER BY THE SHEER FORCE
OF WILL OF OUR INNATE HUMANITY. AND WHILE THOSE MAY SEEM LIKE POWERFUL WORDS, YOU CAN REST ASSURED THAT GIANNICO IS JUST THAT
GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES.
